JUNIOR ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT (JADU)

A Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) is a residential unit with a size limitation of no more than 500 square feet, exclusively situated within the confines of a single-family residence. The unique aspect of a JADU lies in its integration with an existing single-family dwelling. In terms of sanitation facilities, a JADU has the flexibility to incorporate its own separate facilities or, alternatively, share sanitation facilities with the primary residence.

What distinguishes a JADU is not only its compact size but also the requirement that either the JADU or the single-family residence, or sometimes both, must be owner-occupied

This criterion underscores the intention to maintain a sense of ownership and accountability within the property, ensuring that the residential space is managed and utilized responsibly.

It’s worth noting that JADUs serve as a versatile solution for expanding housing options within a single-family property while promoting sustainable and efficient land use. The accommodation of separate sanitation facilities offers a degree of independence to the JADU, enhancing its functionality as an independent living space while maintaining a harmonious connection with the primary residence. This innovative approach aligns with contemporary trends in urban planning and housing, providing both flexibility and adaptability in addressing housing needs within a community.
